Regular Dental Wellness Visits are key to preventing dental problems and having an overall healthy life. Clinical studies show the link between gum disease and heart disease. We know that keeping your gums healthy can help you live a longer healthier life with less medical issues later on.
At Stunning Smiles, our patients become part of our family. Family dentistry is all about treating you and your family’s dental needs. Each member of your family is at a different stage of oral health. Children need a different level of care than adults. Having a family dentist in Las Vegas, NV that you can trust is critical to your family’s oral health.
The purpose of preventative care is in its name – to prevent more serious dental problems before they wreak havoc on your mouth and overall health. A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient and our family dentistry to preserve the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions. Our Las Vegas, NV family dentistry offers many preventative dental services.
Dental Cleanings and X-Rays
Prevention includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays so that the dentist can see how teeth are growing and check for any future problems.
Regular Hygiene Checkups
Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is continued in the family dentistry office by the efforts of your dentist and dental hygienist to promote, restore, and maintain your oral health.
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars, and any deep grooves that are hard to clean. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing those teeth and creating a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. Sealants can protect teeth from decay for many years.
Custom-fit mouthguards provide the best fit and therefore the best, most comfortable protection for athletes who participate in baseball, gymnastics, volleyball, football, hockey, basketball, and any other sport that contains a high risk of injury. Upon impact, the mouthguard cushions the blow, preventing chipped or broken teeth and minimizing damage to the tongue, lips, and cheek lining.
Dr. Racanelli is able to notice physical signs of clenching and grinding your teeth at night and may recommend a custom plastic night guard, to reduce the pressure and absorb the force of biting. This can help significantly with jaw pain, clicking and popping of the jaw or teeth sensitivity.
Oral Cancer Screenings
We utilize Oral ID fluorescent light technology to detect early and reversible stages of oral cancer. Dr. Racanelli believes so strongly in this potential life-saving exam that is part of our standard of care at our family dentistry and there is no additional charge for the two minute exam.
Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would get infected, swell and lead to severe complications. Root canal treatment is highly successful and usually lasts a lifetime, although occasionally a tooth may have to be re-treated due to new infections.
There are two temporomandibular joints (TMJ) which allow your jaw to open, close, and move side to side. If those joints are misaligned, this may cause jaw clicking, teeth grinding, facial pain, and discomfort in your temple, ear, neck, and shoulders. If you are suffering from these types of symptoms, contact our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Racanelli at Stunning Smiles Family Dentistry of Las Vegas to find more about TMJ therapy.
ARESTIN is an effective antibiotic treatment that comes in powder form. This powder is easily placed inside infected periodontal pockets just after the dental professional finishes the scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure.
Our resident family dentist in Las Vegas, NV, Dr. Racanelli, recommends routine dental visits every six months to maintain optimum health and keep track of any potential problems.
Family Dental Care and Dental Services
In addition to our preventative dental services mentioned earlier, we also offer cosmetic dental procedures and restorative dental procedures that we combine with our advanced technology. Some of these procedures include:
- Teeth Whitening
- Dental Implants
- Full Mouth Reconstruction
Some of the advanced dental technology we have include:
This hand-held instrument quickly and comfortably detects small cavities earlier than more conventional methods, such as radiography. It can find 50 percent of the decay that goes undetected by radiography without exposing you to radiation and is invaluable in the family dentistry practice to prevent future dental problems.
We use digital imaging software in our family dentistry to take a digital picture of you and enhance it to predict how a particular treatment or cosmetic procedure would change the appearance of your teeth. This software is highly beneficial for patients who are considering cosmetic procedures.
Digital imaging significantly decreases your exposure to radiation by approximately 75%, compared to that of standard x-rays used in many offices. With digital radiographs, we take a picture of your teeth, then almost immediately see it on a computer monitor. This large, color-enhanced image lets us get a better picture of your oral health, allowing for earlier treatment. This is also better for the environment as it doesn’t use photo chemicals and traditional film, thus eliminating environmental waste.
Intra-oral cameras allow us to take video of your teeth and project the live image onto a television screen in the treatment room. The images are magnified, allowing us to better see and detect any decay, cracked or leaking fillings, or other problems. This helps us to diagnose and treat problems earlier than was ever before possible.
Soft Tissue Laser:
The most advanced dental lasers are designed to assist Dr. Racanelli in the treatment of soft/gingival tissues (gums). Most family dentistry procedures can be performed comfortably, without an injection for treatment of the gums.
We can’t treat what we can’t see. With the use of magnification optics, Dr. Racanelli is able to visualize things not otherwise perceptible to the naked eye to improve the quality of care for his family dentistry patients and expand the range of treatments offered.
We are also proud to offer CEREC Same Day Crowns. Everything from tooth preparation to fixing the final crown is done in just a single appointment, within a few hours. CEREC™ CAD/CAM technology scans your prepared tooth and sends the data to an in-office milling machine, which makes your crown in your mouth in about an hour – not weeks. CEREC crowns save your tooth as they require less preparation and filing than that required for traditional crowns. You can have your new, beautiful smile almost immediately at Stunning Smiles of Las Vegas!

FAQs About Family Dentistry
What type of toothbrush should I use?
The brand of the toothbrush is not as critical as the type of bristle and the size of the head. A soft toothbrush with a small head is recommended because medium and hard brushes tend to cause irritation and contribute to the recession of the gums, and a small head allows you to get around each tooth more completely and is less likely to injure your gums. It’s unnecessary to “scrub” the teeth as long as you are brushing at least twice a day and visiting your dentist at least twice a year for cleaning.
What is the best toothpaste?
Generally, it depends. However, it’s advisable to use a toothpaste containing fluoride to decrease the incidence of dental decay. Sometimes we do provide our patients with specialized kinds of toothpaste designed for specific conditions.
When should I take my child to the dentist?
We recommend bringing babies to a family dentistry around the one-year mark. These first visits are mostly about getting kids used to the dentist’s chair and educating parents about how to care for baby’s teeth. However, if your child is drinking from a cup and doesn’t snack or drink in the middle of the night, you can wait until age 2 to visit the dentist.
There is nothing wrong with my teeth, why do I need to go to the dentist?
Your teeth may feel fine, and they may look OK, but you really can’t know what is happening underneath the surface unless you see the dentist. Only your dentist can help keep your smile healthy and looking beautiful on the inside and out.
How do I find the right dentist?
It’s important to find a family dentistry you are comfortable with and who understands your concerns and addresses them clearly. During your first visit, you should be able to determine whether the dentist is right for you. During your appointment, consider the following:
- Is the appointment schedule convenient?
- Is the office easy to get to and close by?
- Does the office appear to be clean and orderly?
- Was your medical and dental history recorded and placed in a permanent file?
- Does the dentist explain techniques for good oral health?
- Is information about cost presented to you before treatment is scheduled?
